Maren Schenk (she/her)
MEd, RCC.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Maren has worked as a Registered Clinical Counsellor in post-secondary and non-profit settings. Prior to becoming a counsellor, she worked in front line social services, including homeless shelters, youth safe houses, and residential community mental health. These roles have instilled in her a deep respect for people’s ability to overcome adversity. As a mother of two, she brings personal insight and empathy to her practice. Maren leverages her diverse background to provide compassionate and effective support to her clients.
FOCUS
Maren listens attentively to her clients, exploring how their behaviours are influenced by thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. She combines Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with interventions based on clients learning to notice and create positive somatic experiences, such as a felt sense of safety, accomplishment, contentment, or happiness. Her approach integrates both top-down (brain to body) and bottom-up (body to brain) techniques.
Maren employs evidence-based therapeutic modalities to support her clients. She has also completed yoga teacher training and incorporates breath and movement practices into her counselling that have been shown to help calm the nervous system.

Approach
Maren believes that the core of therapy-assisted change is a working relationship built on empathizing with the client’s experience. Understanding that it can be hard to openly share feelings, especially for young people, she incorporates art, games, and other activities to create a comfortable space for clients.
In today’s world, it’s easy to feel inadequate compared to others. Maren counters these thinking traps by listening for clients’ strengths and using interventions to enhance what is already working for them. She employs techniques from Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Narrative Therapy to help clients gain distance from their “problem story” and identify areas in their lives where they can make positive changes.
